Applied research here means work in which a result remains connected to its material, method, and limit of inference. A chart, map, or model is useful only when a reader can distinguish an observation from a scenario, understand a changed definition, and return to the data version. The account therefore includes source selection, transformations, manual decisions, and reproduction limits rather than only the final effect. These articles do not present modelled variants as certain forecasts or missing data as a smooth story. They invite inspection of a method and of the boundaries that constrain it.
The practical standard does not require every reader to rerun an entire study. It does require an identified part to be checkable: the source of one number, a transformation decision, the scope of a scenario, or a limitation that changes the meaning of a comparison.
Source before chart
A data point becomes meaningful only when its source, access date, territorial or analytical unit, and field meaning can be named. A chart can make comparison easier, but it cannot replace provenance. When a series comes from different publications, the record needs to say which observations are direct and which were recalculated or harmonised.
Transformation is a decision
Cleaning, joining, changing a unit, filling a gap, and selecting an aggregation affect what can be concluded from data. Each transformation needs a name, order, and input version so that a reproducing reader does not have to guess how a result was made. Working code does not remove the need to describe the meaning of that choice or what it fails to retain.
Observation is not scenario
An observation describes identified material within its time and definition boundaries. A scenario adds assumptions about what may happen next. The two can appear beside each other, but they cannot use the same language of certainty. Keeping them distinct protects a reader from treating a modelled variant as historical fact or a data gap as a smooth story.
A reproduction package
A minimum reproduction package connects a data version, method description, known limitations, and the steps needed to obtain an identified result. For BY Maps, it also means checking whether population definitions and boundaries are comparable before series are placed together. If a result depends on a manual choice or inaccessible material, that must be marked as a reproduction boundary rather than hidden in instructions.
