A country concentrating around its capital

Reading 129 years of demographic change without hiding data gaps

A long time series can reveal structural change, but only with explicit definitions, sources, and a clear boundary between history and scenario.

In brief

  • A map does not replace source documentation.
  • Comparability changes over time.
  • A scenario is not an observation.

One map does not show a process

Population distribution in one year may suggest centre and periphery, but it does not explain when or why the pattern emerged. That requires a time series whose points are comparable only after sources and definitions are documented.

BY Maps treats visualisation as an interface to data, not as a replacement for methodology.

Limits of comparability

Across a long period, administrative borders, population definitions, publication frequency, and data availability change. Without an explicit model of those shifts, the result becomes an artificially smooth story.

Each point should carry a source, date, territorial unit, and quality flag. A historical correction should not silently overwrite an earlier dataset version.

Observation and scenario

Historical data describes published observations. A projection describes assumptions about the future. They may appear close on a chart, but the data model and interface language must keep them separate.

Keeping gaps visible

A gap may remain a gap. Interpolation is acceptable only as a separately labelled layer with a named method. Users should be able to distinguish sourced, recalculated, and modelled values.

Conclusion

A credible demographic narrative does not begin with animation. It begins with provenance, versioning, and language that does not turn a scenario into a fact.

01 / METHOD

The question the test must answer

The question is demographic change over time, not an attractive map: what a series measures, how territorial units can be compared, and where observation ends and scenario begins. The value of the material is that a reader can separate the user question from a convenient tool metric and identify the point at which a result is no longer sufficient for the next stage of work.

02 / METHOD

Material and counterexamples

A source series must retain its date, definition, version, and territorial scope. Joining periods with different boundaries or methods without a note creates false continuity. Control material is not meant to confirm the author’s thesis; it should expose a case in which a plausible result is dangerously misleading for the workflow at hand.

03 / METHOD

Control method

Transformations should be recorded from raw series to chart: normalising names, units, periods, and calculations. Missing data are neither zero nor proof of a trend. The account includes step order, input, and result trace so an independent person can inspect what was measured and what the procedure does not measure at all.

04 / METHOD

Acceptance matrix

A reproduction package makes it possible to recreate an identified view from a specified data and code version and separately inspect conclusions that are only conditional scenarios. Criteria are stated before the result is read, so a single successful example cannot substitute for control of a critical failure type.

05 / METHOD

Handoff and rerun

BY Maps leads to data and code; every subsequent edition should record a source or transformation change and reassess comparability. Reproducibility also means showing why a subsequent run differs from an earlier one and who decides whether a new version may be used.

06 / METHOD

Boundary of the conclusion

The article does not make a forecast or assign causes to trends without a separate source. With an incomplete series, the boundary of the conclusion is part of the result. The material is therefore methodological: it does not pose as a universal recipe or as an independent confirmation that has not been performed.

07 / METHOD

A worked check

A practical check compares the same indicator after two identified transformations and records whether a difference comes from input data, definition, or calculation. A chart change should not be read as a change in the phenomenon until that path has been checked against a specific series version.

08 / METHOD

Source and review record

A reproduction package identifies the source series, data version, code, and transformation step used for a view. BY Maps permits a return to code and material, but a reader must still check dataset currency, licence, and unit comparability before using an outcome beyond the described research.

LIM

Limitations and scope

Interpretation depends on administrative boundaries, population definitions, and historical publication quality.
