AI No Longer Lives Only in Chat: The Professional Tools of OpenAI and Anthropic
From the doctor's office and accounting department to the research lab — how language-model companies are becoming providers of professional work tools
A survey of professional OpenAI and Anthropic tools for healthcare, finance, law, science, office work, customer support, design, and security.
In brief
- The main shift is from answering questions to doing work.
- Connected data, tools, permissions, and verification procedures create specialization.
- An announced product, an available product, and a suitable product are three different claims.

When people talk about OpenAI, they usually think of ChatGPT and Codex. Anthropic brings Claude and Claude Code to mind. But behind the familiar chat window another world already exists: specialized environments for healthcare, finance, law, science, accounting, design, customer support, and software development.
The main shift is from answering questions to doing work. Not "tell me how contracts are reviewed," but "compare this contract with our company policy and prepare amendments." Not "explain a financial model," but "build it from the statements and show where the numbers came from."
These are not twenty different AIs
The same underlying model can power many products. Specialization comes from connected data, instructions, tools, interfaces, permissions, and verification procedures. It is therefore important to distinguish an application, an industry solution, a plugin, and a bespoke enterprise implementation.
Healthcare
ChatGPT for Healthcare is designed for healthcare organizations: clinical search, internal knowledge, document preparation, access management, and auditing. Integration with Epic can provide appropriately authorized access to electronic health-record information.
For individual professionals there is ChatGPT for Clinicians, while Health in ChatGPT is aimed at helping users understand their own health information and prepare for conversations with clinicians.
Anthropic offers Claude for Healthcare. Alongside clinical information, it addresses administrative workflows such as insurance authorization, coverage rules, medical codes, and supporting documentation.
Specialization is no longer a prompt saying "act as a doctor." It is the organization of work around data, procedures, and human responsibility.
Finance and accounting
OpenAI is developing ChatGPT for Financial Services, a specialized environment for financial organizations, including investment-banking and public-company analysis. It can work with professional sources such as Daloopa, PitchBook, LSEG News, and Crunchbase.
The goal is to support an analyst through a chain of work: collect data, compare periods, identify comparable companies, build a model, and show the basis for conclusions. OpenAI also offers a separate Investment Banking plugin.
Anthropic provides financial-agent templates for meeting preparation, statement analysis, financial modeling, and market research.
In accounting, OpenAI has described Tax AI, developed with Thrive Holdings for accounting firms in the Crete group. The system processes source documents and client notes, preparing information for tax software and subsequent human review. This is a genuine move into professional workflow, but it is not a universal "OpenAI accountant."
Customer support
One of OpenAI's most revealing products is Presence, designed for enterprise voice and text support agents. Such an agent can use information from company systems, answer customers, perform permitted actions, and escalate difficult cases to a person.
A bot that repeats the return policy is an information interface. An agent that can locate an order, check its status, and initiate an authorized procedure is participating in the workflow.
Anthropic also enables support agents built on Claude with access to internal knowledge and business tools.
Office work and data
Claude Cowork is designed for multi-step work with files, documents, and connected tools. A user can delegate a whole task: research material, process documents, build a table, or prepare a report.
Claude for Microsoft 365 brings this approach into Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
OpenAI is developing a Data agent in ChatGPT Work for corporate sources such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, and MongoDB, while respecting permissions and internal definitions of business metrics.
Legal work
Anthropic is developing legal plugins and connections to professional systems. The Legal Productivity Plugin supports contract review, initial NDA triage, and legal drafting based on internal rules.
The point is not to ask whether a contract is "good," but to compare it with a specific organizational policy. Part of professional expertise becomes a repeatable procedure, while qualified human review remains essential.
Science
OpenAI has Rosalind Workbench, a research environment for life sciences. Anthropic is developing Claude Science, combining literature search, computational analysis, visualization, and scientific writing.
Reproducibility is critical. A beautiful chart means little if we cannot reconstruct the data, exclusions, and method. Professional AI therefore needs to provide not only an answer, but a path to the answer.
Design, code, and security
Claude Design is intended for mockups, interactive prototypes, and presentations. Codex Security from OpenAI analyzes repositories, searches for potential vulnerabilities, and proposes fixes. Anthropic offers Claude Security.
Even within one profession, different AI tools are emerging: one helps build a feature, another investigates how that feature might break.
The next layer: agent platforms
OpenAI is developing Agents API --- infrastructure for agentic applications: files, code execution, tools, and coordination of workers. Anthropic has a similar layer in Claude Managed Agents.
This creates a paradox: OpenAI and Anthropic are simultaneously becoming competitors to specialized startups and infrastructure providers on which new startups can be built.
What this changes for startups
The most vulnerable product is one whose entire value is a polished interface, several prompts, and a "generate report" button. Stronger products are embedded in real industry workflows, understand the client's documents and rules, respect permissions, handle exceptions, and have their own quality controls.
Independent teams still have three strong areas:
- Knowledge of the real workflow.
- Integration with the organization, its systems, and its data.
- **Demonstrable value: measurable time savings, quality, and
controlled risk.**
What ordinary users should take away
Instead of asking "Which chatbot is the smartest?" it is more useful to ask:
"What recurring work do I want to delegate to the system --- and what will it need in order to do it?"
A general chat may be enough for discussing text. Document-heavy work calls for workspaces and integrations. Healthcare, finance, and legal work require attention to data sources, permissions, auditing, limitations, and review procedures.
And one distinction matters: a product has been announced, a product is available, and a product is suitable for your organization are three different claims.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The most important development is not another "AI for a profession."
The unit of the product is changing: instead of an answer, vendors increasingly offer a completed stage of work.
For users, this is a reason to look beyond the familiar chat window. For professionals, it is an opportunity to rethink routine work. For developers, it is a reminder that access to a powerful model and a useful professional product are not the same thing.
The future of this competition is not settled. But the right benchmark is becoming clear: judge a system not by how convincingly it talks about work, but by how reliably it helps get the work done.
